Characterized by its tear-drop shape, the Roimata is a symbol that speaks to the depths of human emotion and the enduring connection between nature and spirituality. Just as nature finds balance in its cycles, the Roimata is thought to restore balance and well-being to those who wear it. It is also worn as a protective talisman, guiding individuals through life's ups and downs.
Māori culture is deeply rooted in the belief that everything in the world is interconnected and for Māori, balance and well-being are crucial aspects of life.
According to Māori mythology, the Roimata design symbolizes the tears of albatross birds. The Ngāti Porou story tells of the introduction of kumara (sweet potatoes) to Aotearoa (New Zealand). In this tale, the ancestor Pourangahua left his wife on the East Coast of Aotearoa when he journeyed back to Hawaiki to obtain kumara tubers. His tohunga (priest) Ruakapanga not only provided him with baskets of kumara tubers but also gifted him two sacred birds to aid his return to Aotearoa. Ruakapanga emphasized the importance of offering prayers of gratitude for a safe return and for the sacred birds' return to Hawaiki, as well as for a bountiful kumara harvest. However, overcome with joy upon reuniting with his beloved wife, Pouranahua forgot his tohunga's instructions. It was only later that he discovered the albatross birds weeping, their tears streaming
Just as tears are an expression of our deepest emotions, the Roimata reminds us of the strength that resides within our tears. It represents the idea that even in our moments of vulnerability, we can find the power to heal and overcome adversity.
As you wear your Roimata, remember is it a symbol of your own strength, your connection to the land, and your ability to find balance and well-being even in the most challenging moments of life.
