Foua’s path to becoming a carver is a story of unexpected beginnings and cultural exploration. After high school, Foua was at a crossroads about his future and decided to explore his cultural roots and build strong foundations through a journey into carving. It was here he found his passion.
Though new to carving, his natural creativity, ambition and eagerness to learn have propelled him forward. Under the guidance of his mentors, Tamaora Walker and Akapita Scally, he constantly challenges himself to refine his techniques and perfect his work. Foua is influenced deeply by his Tokelauan and Māori roots. He dreams of incorporating unique motifs from Tokelau into his work, aiming to create pieces that resonate with his cultural identity and the broader Pacific community. Foua is of Te Arawa, Tainui and Tokelauan descent.
