The artist behind this creationJayme believes pounamu is a magical material that deserves the best possible finish and this is what he strives for when crafting every piece. Originally from Napier, he now resides on a 10-acre lifestyle block just outside of Greymouth. Living in the heart of Marsden pounamu country, Jayme is extremely lucky to have the New River running through his land.

Traditionally, the toki or adze was expertly lashed to carved wooden shafts and wielded as tools and ceremonial objects by Māori.

The Toki

Toki are now worn around the neck as a symbol of strength and courage. This association links back to when toki blades crafted from pounamu were used as woodcutting tools due to pounamu's exceptional strength. It is said the Toki takes on the mauri or life force of the wearer, and this essence is passed from generation to generation.

An unlikely connection?

“I feel deeply connected to the people of the long white cloud, the sadness that I thought I reckognized as a young kid in the eyes of Maori people, but also the strength that I felt radiating of many of the people I met in NZ fascinated me and it was years later that I discovered the same strength, the same sadness, the same pride in myself. As a native to my land (I am of the celtic tribe, my ancestors are celts and prussians) nowadays so called Germany, I see private companies taking our water, our rights, our land (I am indigenous and I cannot own land here...) poison our food, taking without giving back, extracting, stealing from our mother and my people, destroying, lying, while beeing left out of any relevant decisions made by selfserving politicians, philantrophists and other liars of every coleur. That is what connects me to this toki that landed in my hands by the natural law of resonance, I carry it with the pride and the strength of my ancestors, architects, poets, philosophers, craftsmen, warriors... honest and heartful people that loved their land, all the animals and plants more than anything else in the world. They were one with them and this deep connection in every aspect of their lifes was their culture. I know that because I carry the same fiery love inside of me and I devote my life to protecting the lands of my ancestors and my people. I stand with my Maori brothers and sisters in their righteous cause to gain back their land, their water, once again. I stand with every culture in their winning struggle to be themselves, to be free of manipulation and supression. I stand with my people and foremost I protect my mother cause without her, what are we? Thank you for making this toki, I will try and live up to what it means.
