We work with some of New Zealands best greenstone artists and pounamu carvers.

Tamaora Walker

Tamaora Walker

The Rotorua-based carver regards pounamu with reverence and respect born of his Māori heritage, with traditional forms and symbolism deeply influencing his designs. Tamaora is from Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Ngāti Whakaue and Ngāti Rangitihi.

Akapita Scally

Akapita Scally

As a part of Rotorua’s carving industry for the past decade, Aka has had the privilege of working alongside some of the town’s finest pounamu artists. His designs are notable for their perfect lines and exemplary finishing, and he is particularly skilled at reflecting traditional forms whilst pushing contemporary boundaries. Akapita is from Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Ngāti Whakaue and Ngāti Rangitihi.

Jason Vercoe

Jason Vercoe

Driven to tell stories through his carvings, Jason takes inspiration from toi Māori (Māori art) and pushes his limits daily to embody his pieces with depth and meaning. Jason is from Ngāti Pikiao.

Daniel's journey is not just about carving pounamu; it's about carving his place in the world of Māori artistry and carrying forward the torch of his ancestors' artistic greatness. Daniel is from Ngāti Pikiao and Ngāti Tarāwhai.

James Pirika

James Pirika

After finishing high school, James began his journey in the Mountain Jade studio, learning the foundations of his craft from Tamaora Walker. As an emerging artist finding his way in carving, James always finds it important to reflect on where he started, allowing him to stay humble while acknowledging Tamaora’s guidance throughout his journey. James is from Te Arawa, Ngāti Te Roro o Te Rangi.

Luke Gardiner

Raised on the wild and rugged West Coast of New Zealand, Luke still calls Hokitika home. A self-taught artist, he finds his inspiration in nature and has been recreating its beauty in greenstone for over a decade.

Growing up the daughter of a pre-eminent carver, you could say jade runs in Hannah’s blood. She took up carving professionally while just a teenager and now runs her own successful workshop in Auckland.

Dylan's journey in carving began on the retail floor at Mountain Jade, where he became captivated by the craftsmanship of the carvers and drawn to the art of jade carving. Dylan is from Te Whānau-ā-Apanui.

Foua Aliki Tuielu

After high school, Foua was at a crossroads about his future and decided to explore his cultural roots and build strong foundations through a journey into carving. Foua is of Te Arawa, Tainui and Tokelauan descent.

Judah is a passionate jade carver based in his stunning home region of Te Tai o Aorere (Tasman Bay).

Clarence Collier

Clarence Collier

Originally from Tairāwhiti (Gisborne), Clarence Collier brings a deep passion for creativity to his craft. Currently based in Petone, Wellington, he has been immersed in the arts for over 28 years, with the past eight dedicated to pounamu carving. Clarence is from Ngāti Porou and Te Ai Tanga a Māhaki.

John Sheehan Snr is the Founder of Mountain Jade, taking it from its humble roots working in his single-man workshop. John's wife, Margaret Franken, has the same shared passion to carve stones and a skilled hand in producing her own contemporary pieces.

Living in the heart of Marsden pounamu country, Jayme is extremely lucky to have the New River running through his land. His passion lies with creating pieces that step away from the traditional, yet still retain a sense of appreciation and respect for the forms of our ancestors.

Paddy Cooper

Carving only New Zealand pounamu and native wood, Paddy is a sixth-generation New Zealander who began his craft over 30 years ago. First taught by local Māori, his work has a distinct Māori influence and he considers his pieces to be taonga, or treasures.

John Sheehan

John Sheehan

John has spent the better part of a decade working with and learning from some of New Zealand’s most talented carvers. Over the years John has developed and honed his craft, but his most important takeaway has been learning about people’s connection to jade.

Born and bred just outside of Hokitika in the heart of New Zealand’s jade territory, Garry Fairbrother’s backyard was a very special spot – a place where spectacular and rare pieces of pounamu could be found.

Donna Summers

Donna Summers

Donna studied at the prestigious Whitecliff College of Arts and Design, winning the Eden Arts Art School competition in her final year. Donna is half Filipino and half NZ-European, and grew up in Northland where she was taught that pounamu is a precious taonga passed down through generations.

Alex Sands

Alex Sands

Alex has been carving since childhood and is an expert at working with jade, as well as other mediums like Māori wood carving. His work is inspired by Aotearoa and traditional carving practices, as well as western culture and style. Alex is from Ngāti Kahungungu o Te Wairoa.

Trent Lawrie

Trent Lawrie

As a passionate hunter, Trent finds much of his inspiration in the great outdoors, and this is what originally drew him to pounamu - its connection with the natural world. In addition to stone, Trent is also a keen carver of bone and wood.

Kawakawa Stone represents the creative collaboration between artists Madelyne Gourdin and Nick Spicer Balme. Both share a deep passion for their craft and have received local and international awards and recognition for their art.

Andrew McGregor

Andrew McGregor

Andrew began his journey with jade and hard-stone carving in 2005. He draws inspiration from ancient cultures and their art forms, including Māori, Celtic, and Viking. Myths, legends, and unexplained mysteries also inspire his work. Andrew has ties to Ngāi Tahu.

Luke spent the first 18 years of his life growing up in Ross, a small town on the West Coast of the South Island, also the home of New Zealand greenstone. Luke is a leading artist in contemporary jade carving, and his style is an amalgamation of traditional and modern design, finding inspiration from natural organic forms.

Niki is an artist who is constantly pushing his technical ability by crafting pounamu carvings that are impressively complex. His designs are influenced by the natural surroundings of the Urewera Ranges, a forested area where he grew up.

It was helping in his father’s jewellery factory more than 40 years ago that first led Neil to jade carving. He was entranced by the luminous pounamu he discovered there, sparking a lifelong obsession with the stone.
